Spirit Dance Collage - Mixed Media - (20 feet x 8 feet)
Artist's Statement
This piece is about the spiritual "aha's I have experienced over the past decade, especially regarding relationships with my friends and partner. It's about living life fully and dwelling in the deepening of experience and sensuality. This piece began years ago on paper as I began to document the extraordinary events happening in non-ordinary reality in my life. I think the first piece came out of my experience swimming in the "Blue Hole" at Incarnate Word while I was an undergraduate art student.
I felt the spiral of life in a metaphoric space- Maiden, Lover, Mother and Wise Crone. Making handmade paper and incorporating photographs taken of me helped me to express the archetypes I experienced while swimming in the spring. It also gave me a sense of the sacredness of place.
Over the years through psychotherapy, bodywork like Rolfing, Jin-Shin Jitsu and Continuum Movement, I continue to experience deeper and deeper levels of reality. My collage is an attempt at a watermark as I move the work in progress around the room. It helps me to document what I am and where I have been, providing support and enlightenment. I sometimes see connections that I have never made previously. I feel nurtured and connected to Christ and the Goddess through the Cothotic images, especially the mother tree.
I began to work on the wall last July 2000. At first I put up sheer curtains because I couldn't bare that strangers were looking at my dreams and reading intimate moments of my life. Over time I became accustomed to people's reactions and it was easier for me to expose myself through the collage.
